Wisconsin Rapids Data Center Moratorium Takes Effect After Legal Publication

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

A moratorium on data center development in Wisconsin Rapids took effect on October 9, after the city completed the legal publication of the ordinance on October 8, the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune reported.

The Common Council passed the moratorium on October 5. It pauses new data center development for up to 12 months — the maximum allowed under state law, with a possible six-month extension — while the city studies health, public safety and utility-rate impacts and drafts zoning rules.

Supporters cited concerns that large data centers strain the electric grid and water supplies and could drive up electricity costs for residents. A registered nurse specializing in population health submitted a letter of support for the pause, and the council simultaneously moved to create a dedicated data center zoning overlay district.

The move reflects a growing wave of local pushback against data center projects across the Midwest, as communities weigh the promised tax revenue and jobs against energy and water demands.
