Pasadena Unified Projects Enrollment to Fall About 20% Over the Next Decade

Friday, October 9, 2026 · City · GSM News

PASADENA — Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. At a special board meeting on October 8, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) presented its latest enrollment forecast: under the medium scenario, enrollment will fall from about 12,700 students in 2026 to about 10,200 in 2036, a decline of roughly 20% over the decade. According to CitizenPortal's October 9 account of the meeting, the forecast will guide district planning for facilities, staffing and budgets.

The report attributes the decline mainly to two forces: persistently low birth rates, which shrink incoming kindergarten classes year by year, and Pasadena's high housing costs, which push young families to move away and steadily drain the school-age population. Similar trends are appearing in districts across California.

District officials told the board the projections will inform possible campus consolidation and resource decisions, but no specific school closures have been proposed. Parents and residents can read the full forecast on the district website, and future board meetings on long-range planning will include opportunities for public comment in person and online.

California school funding is tied directly to enrollment, so a decade of decline shrinks the budget pie year after year, affecting building maintenance, specialty programs and staffing — which is why long-range forecasts become some of a district's most closely read documents. Pasadena parent groups said their chief concern is whether the numbers will be used to justify school consolidations, and they asked the district to hear each school community before deciding anything. District staff responded at the meeting that the forecast is a planning tool, that the current phase is about verifying data and gathering feedback, and that any campus changes would be published separately with hearings. Residents can download the birth, housing and migration data behind the forecast from the district's demographics page, and further board discussion is on this school year's meeting calendar.
