Indiana: Nucor to Invest $105 Million Expanding Crawfordsville Plant, Adding Up to 100 Jobs

Indiana's manufacturing sector has another win. On October 8, Governor Mike Braun announced that Nucor Corporation, the largest steel producer in the United States, will invest $105 million to expand its Towers & Structures facility in Crawfordsville, Indiana, creating up to 100 new jobs by the end of 2029. The expansion will add 125,000 square feet under roof on the company's roughly 180-acre Montgomery County site, which began production in 2025, using the same automation, straight-line production and hot-dip galvanizing operations. The added capacity will produce engineered utility structures that support grid hardening, renewable energy projects and the nationwide build-out of EV charging stations. Nucor expects to break ground in the first quarter of 2027 and begin hiring in mid-2027, adding to the plant's current team of 328 employees. New positions are expected to pay average annual wages of about $87,500, nearly 150% of the Montgomery County average. The governor's office noted this is Nucor's fifth major investment in Indiana in recent years, totaling $597.5 million; the company employs more than 2,600 people at over a dozen locations statewide. For Chinese families working in Midwestern manufacturing and engineering, the continued expansion of the steel and power-infrastructure supply chain means more well-paid, stable technical jobs. Nucor CEO Leon Topalian said the investment supports modernization of the nation's power grid; the project remains subject to regulatory approvals. Nucor's Towers & Structures business was created to serve utilities' demand for large steel structures as they upgrade aging transmission lines.
