Montana Governor Leads Strategic Trade Mission to India, Promoting Pulses and Critical Minerals

Friday, October 9, 2026 · States · GSM News

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte announced on October 2 that he would lead a strategic trade mission to India from October 5 to 9, followed by a stop in Sri Lanka. The delegation spans agriculture, higher education, critical minerals, manufacturing, photonics, quantum technology and the biosciences, with the goal of opening South Asian markets to Montana businesses and universities. India is the world's largest consumer and importer of pulses, while Montana is the nation's top producer of chickpeas and lentils — a natural trade fit: India purchased more than $14 million worth of Montana peas, lentils, chickpeas and commercial aircraft parts in 2025, after purchases topping $64 million in 2024. Gianforte said the mission would build on existing trade ties and seek new partners for the state's minerals, manufacturing and technology sectors, with meetings arranged in advance with Indian institutions and industry groups. For Chinese-American traders working in agricultural commodities and cross-border business, Montana's pulse trade with India and any new cooperation on critical minerals are developments worth following.
