North Carolina Invests $17 Million in Rural Mental Health Services

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein and the state Department of Health and Human Services announced on Oct. 7 more than $17 million through the NC Rural Health Transformation Program to improve mental health services. The package includes $4 million for Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, $3 million to expand opioid use disorder treatment, $4 million for mobile outreach crisis response teams and $3 million for coordinated specialty care for first-episode psychosis. The program receives over $213 million from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for fiscal 2026–27, serving more than 3.5 million rural residents. Nearly 1.5 million North Carolinians face mental health challenges, with rural areas especially short on nearby care.
