South Dakota Invests Over $13 Million in Community Behavioral Health Clinics

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has announced 12 modernization and infrastructure grants for the state's Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs), totaling more than $13 million under the Rural Health Transformation (RHT) program. The governor's office said the funds will expand service capacity, build crisis services, upgrade IT infrastructure and grow the behavioral-health workforce; the next funding round will be announced later this fall. The state's 13 CCBHCs were chosen through a competitive public process in April 2026, and the governor has signed HB 1044 to appropriate RHT funding. In sparse rural regions, psychiatrists and counselors are chronically scarce, and patients in crisis often cannot get timely assessment or a bed. For Chinese immigrants, language and cultural barriers can widen that gap further, which is why community-based clinics close to home matter. The grants put federal rural-health money directly into frontline clinics and offer a concrete example of how transformation funds reach patients.
