Wisconsin Opens $139M Forensic Science Center in Milwaukee

Friday, October 9, 2026 · States · GSM News

Wisconsin officials on Oct. 9 cut the ribbon on a new Forensic Science and Protective Medicine building serving the Milwaukee area. The state invested nearly $139 million in the four-story facility — $115 million through the State Building Commission plus about $24 million from a 2022 appropriation.

The building brings several agencies under one roof: the Milwaukee Crime Laboratory, the county medical examiner's office, the county Office of Emergency Management, and Versiti's organ procurement organization and tissue bank. It sits on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus, near Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley attended the ceremony. State officials said co-locating the crime lab, medical examiner, and emergency management should shorten the chain between evidence testing and emergency response across the Milwaukee region.

Forensic and crime-lab backlogs have drawn scrutiny across the United States, since testing delays can stall both prosecutions and exonerations. With the new building open, evidence testing and forensic services for the region will gradually shift to the new site.
