GlobalFoundries Unveils FDX Fusion Physical SI Platform as €1.1B Dresden Expansion Tops Out

GlobalFoundries on October 9 unveiled FDX Fusion, a next-generation chip platform designed for 'Physical SI' applications such as robots, autonomous machines and industrial systems. The platform aims to combine 7nm-class digital performance with analog, RF and embedded-memory functions on a single energy-efficient process, so machines can sense, compute and react in real time instead of sending everything back to power-hungry data centers.
The announcement came as the company topped out its SPRINT expansion in Dresden, Germany. The €1.1 billion project is expected to raise annual capacity to more than one million 300mm wafers by the end of 2028, making Dresden Europe's largest foundry site. CEO Tim Breen said Europe's industrial base depends on chips that are available, trusted and built close to customers.
