Pentagon to Livestream Fort Hood Gunman Hasan's Firing-Squad Execution on Dec. 3, Drawing Bishops' and Lawmakers' Condemnation

A Pentagon official confirmed on Oct. 8 that the U.S. military will livestream the firing-squad execution of Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan, with details to follow. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in an interview that the execution is set for Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. at Fort Hood, Texas, carried out by soldiers with rifles; Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle set the date. If carried out as planned, it would be the first U.S. military firing-squad execution since 1945 and the first military execution in more than 65 years. President Trump had previously approved the firing-squad method — GSM reported the approval on Oct. 6; this story covers the livestream decision and the date, which GSM has not yet reported.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people and wounded 32 at Fort Hood on Nov. 5, 2009, and was sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013. Reuters reported on Oct. 9 that Trump, speaking at a White House event, mentioned Hasan's execution but did not comment on the livestream plan, and that the White House directed questions to the Pentagon.
The livestream plan drew bipartisan and religious criticism. Republican Senator Thom Tillis sharply criticized the idea on social media. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, condemned the livestream decision in an Oct. 9 statement and urged officials to reconsider; Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin also spoke against turning an execution into a public spectacle in Rome the same day.
