Maine Governor Proclaims October Disability Employment Awareness Month

Saturday, October 10, 2026 · States · GSM News

Maine Governor Janet Mills has proclaimed October 2026 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the state. The proclamation notes that the employment rate for Mainers with disabilities ages 16 to 64 has risen to 44 percent, though it remains well below the 83 percent rate for those without disabilities. As an Employment First state, Maine treats employment as the first and preferred option for people with disabilities receiving state services. The governor called on employers, schools and community organizations to mark the month with activities promoting pathways such as registered apprenticeships.
