USDA Announces $28 Million to Help Rural Families Build Homes Through Mutual Self-Help Program

USDA Rural Development announced on October 9 that $28 million will be available in fiscal year 2026 through its Mutual Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants, which help very-low- and low-income rural families build their own homes cooperatively.
The money goes to eligible organizations—not as direct checks to families—including government nonprofits, federally recognized tribes and private nonprofits. Recipients provide technical and supervisory assistance, recruit families and help with loan applications. Grant funds may not be used to hire construction labor, buy land or building materials, or pay participants' debts. USDA says applications are accepted through local offices year-round.
