Atlanta Holds Emergency Training for Nightlife Workers, Mayor Attends Drill

Atlanta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia. Atlanta city officials and first responders held a safety and emergency training session for local nightlife workers this week, with Mayor Andre Dickens attending in person to hear directly from bar and nightclub professionals. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the training took place on the evening of Oct. 7 at Live Nation's Atlanta headquarters on Ponce de Leon Avenue, hosted by the Mayor's Office of Film, Entertainment, and Nightlife.
Business owners, bartenders, servers and security personnel took part. Atlanta Fire Battalion Chief Sherwin Brown demonstrated critical emergency skills, including how to administer Narcan nasal spray to reverse drug overdoses and how to apply tourniquets to stop severe bleeding. Cortney Foster of the Atlanta Nightlife Advisory Council said training venue staff to respond to medical emergencies keeps patrons safer, adding: "Drug use is real in the nightlife space. And rather than just trying to pretend it doesn't happen, knowing how to handle it when someone gets in a bad situation is more beneficial."
Mayor Dickens said at the session: "We're a town of people that love to entertain. A lot of conventions, a lot of sporting events, a lot of tourists, a lot of business people." The training is part of an ongoing quarterly initiative, with the next session scheduled in a couple of months.
Atlanta has not experienced a mass casualty incident at a nightclub in approximately two years. In 2024, a shooting at Elleven 45 Lounge in Buckhead killed two people and injured six others, after which Mayor Dickens successfully sought the venue's closure. The most recent nightclub shooting in Atlanta occurred in July at Tattletale Lounge on Piedmont Road SE, where one man was wounded and survived.
