Phoenix police officers fatally shot an armed man in south Phoenix on the afternoon of October 10, the Arizona Republic reported — at least the 63rd law enforcement shooting in Maricopa County this year.

Police spokesperson Sgt. Chris Berrelleza said in an email that at about 12:45 p.m., officers responded to a call of someone armed with a gun and knife walking around an apartment complex in the area of Second Street and Sunland Avenue. As officers responded, they received information that the person had walked into an apartment. When officers approached the unit to talk to the individual, a man holding a firearm and knife exited.

Berrelleza said officers gave multiple commands for the man to drop the weapon and fired PepperBall munitions at him. The man ignored the commands and raised his firearm toward the officers, who then fired at him. "Once safe, officers approached the man to render medical aid," Berrelleza said. The Phoenix Fire Department took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No one else, including officers, was injured, and there were no other suspects, police said.

According to data compiled by the Arizona Republic, including this incident there have been at least 63 law enforcement shootings in Maricopa County this year; Phoenix officers have shot 12 people, at least 10 of them fatally. The man's identity has not been released, and the investigation continues.

The high number of police-involved shootings in Phoenix has fueled ongoing community debate over use-of-force policies and accountability. Body-camera footage and investigative findings from this incident are expected to be released as the review proceeds.
