Delhi Braces for Second Day of Youth Protests as More Than 2,000 Detained Over Election Chief Row

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · World News · GSM News

More than 2,000 people were detained in New Delhi on Saturday as India's capital locked down ahead of youth-led protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Reuters reported. The movement, calling itself "Cockroach" (the Cockroach Janta Party), is protesting an electoral-roll revision that critics say favors Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP.

Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed, mobile internet was suspended in the central business district, and dozens of metro stations and markets were shut. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and colleagues were detained aboard their flight from Mumbai as it landed in Delhi.

By Sunday, a court had ordered the release of Dipke and the two other leaders on condition they keep the peace for a year. Most of Saturday's detainees were released late that night, metro stations reopened and mobile internet was restored, though security remained tight as the capital braced for a second day of demonstrations.
