Cloudflare Acquires Deno: Node.js Creator's Team Joins, Deno Deploy to Shut Down in Six Months

Cloudflare announced on Friday that it is acquiring Deno, the startup behind the JavaScript and TypeScript runtime of the same name, TechCrunch reported on Oct. 10. Deno was co-founded by Node.js creator Ryan Dahl and Bert Belder and had raised $26 million in total, including a Series A led by Sequoia; financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cloudflare principal engineer Kenton Varda said the company will use the acquisition to improve the Workers programming model and platform. The immediate catalyst was celld, an open-source implementation of Workers that Deno recently launched; Dahl and Belder will lead work to merge celld's code and ideas into workerd, Cloudflare's open-source Workers runtime.
For existing Deno users, the roadmap changes are significant: the Deno runtime will receive monthly maintenance releases for one more year before the team ends its development; Deno Deploy will shut down after six months with migration support for paying customers moving to Cloudflare Workers; the JSR registry will keep operating.
