[Video] 'Other Mommy' Tops North American Box Office With ~$28M Despite D+ CinemaScore

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11 — The North American box office for the Oct. 9-11 weekend has a new horror champion: Universal/Blumhouse's 'Other Mommy' opened to an estimated $28 million, well above the studio's $20 million projection. The film grossed $12.6 million on Friday, including $3.6 million in Thursday previews.

Oscar winner Jessica Chastain stars in dual roles — mother Ursula and the sinister entity known as 'Other Mommy' that looks uncannily like her. Based on Josh Malerman's novel 'Incidents Around the House' and directed by Rob Savage, the film follows a young girl, Bela, who encounters a frightening presence identical to her mother. Made for just $19 million, it is already a profitable hit.

Reviews and receipts sharply diverged: the film earned a rare D+ CinemaScore — the worst audience grade for any movie in two years, since 'Megalopolis' in 2024 — with 19% critics and 46% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. But with Halloween approaching, horror audiences showed up anyway, proving the genre is largely critic-proof.

Elsewhere: Aaron Sorkin's 'The Social Network' follow-up 'The Social Reckoning' opened soft at roughly $6-7 million; Anne Hathaway's 'Verity' added an estimated $13-15 million in its second weekend for a strong hold in second place; the 'Resident Evil' reboot took in about $7 million. The pre-Halloween horror box office battle is officially on.
