Italy Marks 76th National Day for Victims of Workplace Accidents; 498 Work Deaths Recorded in First Eight Months of 2026

On Sunday 11 October 2026, Italy observed the 76th National Day for Victims of Workplace Accidents. The day, promoted by ANMIL, the national association of workers injured and disabled at work, is held every year on the second Sunday of October; this year's national ceremony took place in Longarone, in the province of Belluno, with the patronage of Rai and media partnership of TGR Rai, while local commemorations were held across the country on the same day.
The figures released for the day come from INAIL, the national workplace insurer: between January and August 2026, Italy recorded 498 deaths from accidents occurring at work, an increase of 5.4 percent on the same period a year earlier. ANMIL's own count, which includes commuting ('in itinere') accidents, put the number of workers who had died by 11 October at 701, and reports of occupational disease rose 16.3 percent to 74,542. By sector, injury reports were highest in manufacturing (41,778), followed by construction (22,382), healthcare (22,353), commerce (19,801) and transport and warehousing (19,635). For comparison, workplace deaths in the whole of 2025 numbered 1,189, down from 1,237 in 2019.
Local ceremonies were held in many cities. In Ferrara, the city council's labour-policy assessor Angela Travagli attended the commemoration together with ANMIL Ferrara president Alberto Alberti and representatives of the labour inspectorate, occupational medicine services, INAIL, the prefecture and the police; Travagli said that behind every accident there is a person and a family, and that remembrance must also mean guaranteeing attention, dignity and real opportunities to return to work for those who survive serious injuries. In Ragusa, the ceremony at the Castle of Donnafugata was opened by the local ANMIL president Maria Agnello, with Mayor Peppe Cassì and other local officials and the head of the Ragusa INAIL office in attendance.
In its statement for the day, ANMIL called for prevention and workplace safety to be strengthened, saying society must not become accustomed to the toll of work-related deaths. The national day has been held annually since its institution; the 2026 observance was the 76th edition.
