Malaysia's Digital Nomad Pass Can Be Extended Two More Years, Digital Ministry Clarifies After Budget 2027

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · World News · GSM News

KUALA LUMPUR — Holders of Malaysia's digital nomad pass, the DE Rantau Nomad Pass, will be allowed to keep living and working remotely in Malaysia once they reach the two-year limit. On October 11, national news agency Bernama reported a Ministry of Digital statement describing the measure as a two-year extension for existing holders who have reached the maximum two-year stay, subject to prescribed eligibility criteria. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had announced the change in his Budget 2027 speech on October 9, telling the Dewan Rakyat: 'Existing DE Rantau Nomad Pass holders that reach the two-year limit will be allowed to continue staying and working remotely in Malaysia, subject to the prescribed eligibility criteria.' The official speech text published by the Ministry of Finance carries the same sentence.

The extension cannot be applied for yet. As of October 12, the published FAQ of MDEC, which administers the pass, still caps it at 24 months, and current expiry dates still apply. No start date for applications has been announced, and the eligibility conditions have not been listed.

DE Rantau is Malaysia's flagship scheme for attracting global remote workers. In the budget speech, the extension sat among measures meant to bring global companies and skilled talent into Malaysia. For foreign remote workers based in the country — and for the serviced apartments, co-working spaces and service businesses of Kuala Lumpur and Penang that host them — whether the pass renews smoothly decides whether a high-spending, long-stay population stays or leaves.

For Chinese readers, the policy points the same way as Malaysia's wider courtship of long-stay visitors, students and 'second home' families in recent years: the more stable the stay rules, the more plannable family decisions on schooling, renting and healthcare become. What to watch next is when MDEC updates its FAQ and application channel, and the fine print of the extension criteria.
