National Education Policy Would Keep 5,000 More Students at School Each Year

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · World News · GSM News

New Zealand's National Party released an education policy on 11 October 2026 under which 5,000 more students a year would stay at school longer. 1News reported the announcement the same day. The policy is aimed at young people who leave school without qualifications, with the goal of lifting completion and credential rates; implementation would involve changes to leaving arrangements and supporting measures.

How long young people stay in education, and how that connects to employment, is a long-standing policy issue in New Zealand. Official statistics have consistently shown that early leavers without qualifications face worse job and income outcomes, and parties have put forward school-completion proposals at successive elections, differing mainly on compulsion and resourcing.

Education is one of the headline issues of this campaign alongside health and the cost of living. In the same week, an Auckland school was reported as the first in the country to convert to a charter school, bringing the debate over school models into public discussion alongside the party policies.

National's proposal would be assessed by the Ministry of Education for implementation if the party wins the election and forms a government. The costing of each party's education promises, and responses from teacher organisations, were still being published and reported.
