Pentagon Raises Iran War Death Toll to 21 — 22 Across the Middle East — as Democrats Slam Shifting Counts

The Pentagon quietly updated its official casualty database, the Defense Casualty Analysis System, late on Friday (Oct. 9), raising the number of U.S. service members who died in operations against Iran to 21, with 865 wounded, NPR and USA Today reported.
The two newly counted deaths were noncombat. A third soldier, Sgt. Devin A. Seibel, 26, who died in a training accident in Iraq in May, was newly listed under Operation Inherent Resolve — bringing total U.S. military deaths in the Middle East since the Iran operations began on Feb. 28 to 22.
Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan said there was "no excuse for a mistake of this magnitude" and called it "an embarrassment" that Congress had to force the correction.
