Philadelphia: Officer Killed in Line of Duty, Suspect Charged with Murder
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia is a city in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (a consolidated city-county). A Philadelphia police officer was fatally shot in the line of duty early Saturday in West Philadelphia, while his partner was seriously wounded. A suspect is in custody and has been charged with murder, CNN reported on October 10.
Just after midnight on October 10, the two officers responded to a report of a man with a gun on a porch in the 100 block of North 52nd Street. As they climbed the steps to the porch, the gunman opened fire, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said at a news conference.
Officer Shane Seiber, 40, a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, was shot three times and died at the hospital. "He fought valiantly, but he lost his life today," Bethel said. Seiber's wife was by his side before he died; he is survived by a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.
Seiber's partner, a 33-year-old officer, was shot 12 times and underwent surgery. He was in stable condition Saturday, though Bethel said he is "not out of the woods yet." According to Action News, the wounded officer is a father of five.
District Attorney Larry Krasner said the suspect, 35-year-old Eric Lewis, faces charges including murder and homicide of a law enforcement officer. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Lewis works for the Philadelphia Water Department. He fled to a nearby alley, fired at responding officers, and eventually surrendered after SWAT officers found him hiding in a tree. Police recovered three firearms at the scene.
