Portugal FA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Cristiano Ronaldo, Imposes Provisional Suspension

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed on Oct. 10 that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo and imposed a provisional suspension on him. According to Reuters, the move is a formal response to Ronaldo's unauthorized departure from the national team training camp, and the player will be barred from playing for Portugal until the investigation concludes.

The proceedings were initiated on Oct. 9 by the federation's non-professional section, concerning facts reported on Oct. 7. According to ESPN, the case has been handed to a disciplinary investigation committee and is being treated as urgent; all case information will remain confidential until the conclusions are published.

According to the Associated Press, Ronaldo was already under an automatic provisional suspension; following the launch of the disciplinary proceedings, the federation added a non-automatic provisional suspension, meaning he will remain suspended until the investigation is complete. The federation has not yet announced a final punishment.

The incident traces back to Sept. 30, when Ronaldo walked out of the Portugal training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark. According to TNT Sports, he had argued with head coach Jorge Jesus over playing time before leaving; in the previous match against Norway, Ronaldo spent the entire game on the bench and never took the field.

After leaving the camp, Ronaldo published a lengthy statement on social media this week explaining himself and apologizing. According to reports, in the statement he accused the coach of breaking promises to him twice, said he accepts whatever punishment the federation hands down, and said he will remain available for national team selection after the punishment is served.

Under the FPF's disciplinary code, an unjustified absence from national team activities can be punished with a suspension of one to six months plus a fine. According to Reuters, Ronaldo had notified the federation before leaving, and whether his reason for leaving was justified will directly determine the severity of the final punishment.

During Ronaldo's absence, Portugal won all three of its matches. According to ESPN, forward Goncalo Ramos scored three goals in those three games.

FPF president Pedro Proenca said all parties hope to see the captain return to the team, but noted that the disciplinary process will be decided by an independent committee.
