Mail Stolen in Broad Daylight from Postal Truck in Sacramento; Postal Inspector Says Ballots May Be Among It

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · City · GSM News

Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California. According to the New York Post on October 10, citing local station KCRA, a brazen broad-daylight mail theft took place around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday (October 6) in Sacramento's College Glen neighborhood: surveillance footage captured a man pulling up in a gray SUV next to a postal truck, popping open the rear compartment and making off with trays of mail, as a witness at a nearby home watched it unfold.

U.S. Postal Inspector Jonathan Lanning told KCRA that ballots "may have been" among the stolen mail. "Mail was stolen, and there may have been ballots affected by the theft," Lanning said. The theft comes as Sacramento County had just mailed out ballots with Election Day approaching, raising concerns that some voters could be left waiting for their chance to vote.

Local resident Mary Brown told KCRA she never received a scheduled USPS delivery that was supposed to include ballots for her great-grandchildren. "I looked at my informed delivery, and it was supposed to have my great-grandchildren's ballot," Brown said. "It was mailed. It should've been in my mailbox that day." Brown said she only learned about the theft through a neighborhood app, leaving her anxious about whether the ballots had been snatched along with the other mail.

Sacramento County elections office employee Ken Casparis told KCRA that any voter who does not receive a ballot can request a replacement. Investigators are working to determine whether election ballots were among the stolen mail; the case remains under investigation.
