Guardians Complete Historic ALDS Comeback, Shut Out White Sox 2-0 in Game 5 to Reach ALCS

CLEVELAND, Oct. 10 — The Cleveland Guardians completed an epic American League Division Series comeback on Saturday night, shutting out the Chicago White Sox 2-0 in a winner-take-all Game 5 at Progressive Field to win the series 3-2. Cleveland becomes just the eighth team since 1995 to overcome a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five division series.
Ace Gavin Williams was untouchable: 5 2/3 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts, tying the franchise postseason single-game record. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth before departing to a standing ovation with the bases loaded and two outs; left-hander Erik Sabrowski struck out White Sox slugger Munetaka Murakami to end the threat. Williams totaled 24 strikeouts in the series, the second-most ever in a best-of-five set behind Gerrit Cole's 25 in the 2019 ALDS.
The offense came from one swing: José Ramírez's two-run homer off Sean Burke in the bottom of the fourth. Ramírez drove in seven runs across Cleveland's three wins, including the Game 4 homer that forced the decider.
The Guardians return to the AL Championship Series for the second time in three seasons. The best-of-seven ALCS begins Monday, Oct. 12 in St. Petersburg, where Cleveland faces the top-seeded, 98-win Tampa Bay Rays. The Guardians have not won a World Series since 1948 — the longest active drought in MLB — and this run is about ending 78 years of waiting.
