Alexandr Wang on Building Muse: From a Two-Person Experiment to the Top of the U.S. App Store

Sunday, October 11, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

A 72-minute Founders Podcast interview with Meta chief SI officer Alexandr Wang, released October 11, traced how the personal SI agent Muse came to be. Muse began as an experiment when Wang and Nat Friedman were playing with the open-source project OpenClaw; the two built a prototype in one to two weeks. A team of fewer than 200 people then turned it into a shipping product in about seven months.

Wang said every feature must pass a behavior checklist of more than 100 items before launch, and that the team bet on consumer personal agents rather than coding agents. Muse launched September 8 and topped the U.S. App Store free chart on September 18. Meta figures relayed by The New York Times put downloads at 6.6 million with 1.8 million daily active users as of October 3; Sensor Tower data cited by The Wall Street Journal on October 12 put cumulative downloads near 9 million, with growth slowing. On October 2, Wang also announced Muse Gadgets, an open hardware ecosystem, and Home Link, a dongle connecting TVs, speakers and other home devices.

Wang was born in 1997 to Chinese physicist parents who worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He dropped out of MIT at 19 to found Scale AI. After Meta invested about $14.3 billion for roughly 49% of Scale in June 2025, he became Meta's chief SI officer. He is 29. (GSM, based on the Founders Podcast interview and public reporting)
