Tyler Perry Donates $750,000 to Help Atlanta Seniors Pay Property Taxes

Atlanta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia. Filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry has donated $750,000 to support low-income senior citizens in Atlanta, providing critical financial relief to help them remain in their homes.
The funds will be distributed through the Invest Atlanta Partnership, the nonprofit arm of the city's economic development authority. The donation is earmarked for two primary objectives: clearing outstanding city, county and school property taxes for more than 300 seniors, and funding a pilot program that will assist 100 additional low-income residents by covering the difference in their property tax bills should costs rise in the future.
The initiative arrives as Atlanta experiences significant growth, which has led to concerns regarding the displacement of long-term residents. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens highlighted the importance of the donation in the context of maintaining community stability, noting that the city's prosperity should not come at the cost of those who have lived in these neighborhoods for years. According to the Mayor, Perry had been involved in discussions regarding the retention of legacy residents and expressed a desire to contribute directly to these efforts.
Perry's career path in the entertainment industry began with significant personal hardship. In the 1990s, he invested his entire $12,000 savings into a stage play titled I Know I've Been Changed. When the production failed to draw a sufficient audience, Perry faced a period of homelessness, spending three months living in his car. Since those early years, Perry has built a substantial career as a writer, director and producer, including the well-known Madea franchise. In 2019, he established Tyler Perry Studios, a 330-acre production complex located in Atlanta. Forbes currently estimates his fortune at approximately $1.4 billion.
