Chicago Hosts 48th Marathon: Kenya's Amos Kipruto Wins Men's Title in 2:01:09, Ethiopia's Hawi Feysa Defends Women's Crown

Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The 48th Chicago Marathon started at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, in Grant Park, with an estimated 55,000 runners taking on the 26.2-mile course through the Loop, Wrigleyville, the Near West Side, Pilsen, Bronzeville and other Chicago neighborhoods. The race is the sixth of seven World Marathon Majors in 2026 and a platinum-label event. Temperatures were slightly warmer than ideal.
Kenya's Amos Kipruto won the men's race in a personal-best 2:01:09, his first Chicago title after finishing third in 2024 and second last year. The first six finishers passed halfway in 1:00:21; Kipruto took a late lead from defending champion Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda, who faded to fourth in 2:04:18. Ethiopia's Tadese Bikila was second in 2:02:56, 1:47 behind, and Milkesa Mengesha third in 2:03:46. American Olympian Clayton Young, racing with a hamstring injury, was the top U.S. man in seventh at 2:05:23.
Ethiopia's Hawi Feysa defended her women's title in a personal-best 2:13:33, dueling Kenya's Sharon Lokedi from the 30-kilometer mark before breaking clear in the final mile. Lokedi was second in 2:14:07 and Kenya's Brigid Kosgei third in 2:14:55. Feysa improved on her 2025 winning time of 2:14:56 by 1:23; it is the second-fastest women's winning time in Chicago history, behind Ruth Chepngetich's 2:09:56 in 2024, and bettered Sifan Hassan's 2:13:44 from 2023. American Emma Grace Hurley was seventh in 2:20:47, the fastest marathon debut in U.S. women's history.
In the wheelchair races, Switzerland's Marcel Hug won in a course-record 1:21:34, his 42nd major victory, and compatriot Catherine Debrunner won in 1:33:16, called an unofficial world record by NBC Chicago, her 14th major title.
