Ohio State Routs Maryland 45-16, but Ryan Day Erupts in His 100th Game Over Sloppy Play

Columbus is a city in Franklin County, Ohio. No. 6 Ohio State cruised past Maryland 45-16 in Saturday's Homecoming game at Ohio Stadium, improving to 5-1. But the easy scoreline masked head coach Ryan Day's fury in his 100th game coaching the Buckeyes.
Day rarely sat down all afternoon: eight penalties for 65 yards and two turnovers — quarterback Julian Sayin's pick-six and a fumble after a blindside sack — had the eighth-year coach waving his arms and staring daggers. Afterward Day said eight penalties are "not the sign of a good team" and turnovers "can't happen." Linebacker TJ Alford said teammates wanted to "stay away" from Day when he was raging.
Despite the sloppiness, the numbers were glittering: Sayin threw for 242 yards and four touchdowns, two to leading Heisman Trophy candidate Jeremiah Smith; the Buckeyes rushed for 207 yards, their second-highest total of the season; and the defense held Maryland to 146 total yards. Special teams showed signs of life too.
Day's anxiety is not misplaced: upcoming opponents like Notre Dame and Indiana won't forgive mistakes the way 2-4 Maryland did. As the columnist put it: winning by 29 still isn't good enough — that's the Day standard.
