Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and San Clemente Hand Out Sandbags as Coastal Flood Threat Lingers

Huntington Beach is a city in Orange County, California. The coastal flooding threat from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel lingered into Monday. A National Weather Service coastal flood advisory for Los Angeles and Orange county beaches remains in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday, with forecasters warning that high tides and large waves could still produce minor to moderate coastal flooding, significant beach erosion and dangerous rip currents.
To help residents prepare, several Orange County coastal cities distributed sandbags to the public on Sunday, including Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and San Clemente. Laguna Beach officials worried Sunday that Laguna Creek, which fills with runoff from inland communities in Orange and Riverside counties, might swell and join the incoming tide, flooding much of the low-lying downtown area.
In Seal Beach, police closed beach parking lots on Sunday as a precaution to protect life and property amid elevated surf and coastal flooding concerns.
Morning high tides of 7 to 7.5 feet are expected Monday and Tuesday, with elevated surf gradually subsiding over the next several days, according to the Weather Service. The weekend storm already damaged oceanside properties and a boardwalk in Long Beach and Newport Beach, where emergency flood work continues. (Sources: ABC Audio; National Weather Service)
