Hurricane Impact: Santa Rosa County Schools Closed Through Oct. 13 (First Report)

Public schools in Santa Rosa County in Florida's Panhandle will remain closed through Tuesday, Oct. 13, as the district continues to assess damage from Hurricane Isaias.
The Santa Rosa County School District announced Sunday, Oct. 11, in a statement posted to Facebook that all schools and district offices will stay closed through Oct. 13. According to the district, staff have been surveying damage to campuses and the storm's impact, and based on the information available, campuses will not be ready for the return of students and staff on Tuesday. Cleanup and recovery efforts need additional time, and roads must be clear and safe before school buses can run.
The district said its goal is to reopen as soon as Oct. 14, but that determination will be made on a school-by-school basis by Tuesday evening, the Pensacola News Journal reported. The school board meeting scheduled for Oct. 13 will still meet at its regular time.
Santa Rosa County schools had already been closed Thursday, Oct. 8, and Friday, Oct. 9, because of the storm, and all school- and district-sponsored activities on Saturday, Oct. 10, were canceled. Public schools in neighboring Escambia County will also be closed Monday, Oct. 12. Students were already scheduled to be off for the Columbus Day holiday, but teacher planning and development activities were canceled so the district can survey damage and make adjustments; plans for Tuesday, Oct. 13, and beyond will depend on the condition of area schools.
Hurricane Isaias struck the Florida Panhandle on Oct. 9-10, bringing high winds, heavy rain and storm surge. Pensacola State College and the University of West Florida also closed campuses and canceled classes during the storm. The district urged parents to watch official channels for reopening updates.
