NEW YORK, Monday, Oct. 12, midday — U.S. stocks split at midday, according to Barron's, MarketWatch and The Motley Fool. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 0.4% to around 51,860, the S&P 500 was roughly flat, down about 0.03%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell about 0.28%. Beneath the calm headline numbers, rotation was sharp: the Philadelphia semiconductor index dropped about 2.7% and the technology sector lost about 1.18%, while energy gained about 1.4%, communication services about 1.09% and financials about 0.75%. Nine of the S&P 500's 11 sectors advanced, yet decliners still led advancers on both the NYSE and Nasdaq.

Traders were rotating into value and dividend stocks and away from growth. Trading took place without the bond market, which was closed for the Columbus Day federal holiday, removing Treasury yields — a key recent driver — from the session. Brent crude traded near $105.58 a barrel and U.S. crude rose to about $106, while gold slipped about 0.56% to roughly $4,192.70 an ounce.

The week ahead is crowded: September CPI is due Wednesday and PPI on Thursday, while third-quarter earnings season opens Tuesday with JPMorgan Chase, UnitedHealth, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Johnson & Johnson among the first major reporters.
