Greece Records 62 Fewer Road Deaths in First Eight Months of 2026

Greece recorded 62 fewer road fatalities during the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to figures published on 12 October 2026. Deputy Infrastructure and Transport Minister Giorgos Kotsiras announced the reduction while speaking at a road safety conference in Athens.
Kotsiras identified three main priorities for improving road safety: stricter road safety regulations, stronger enforcement through modern technology and greater use of public transport. He highlighted the importance of public awareness and responsible driving, particularly among younger generations.
The government is preparing legislation to introduce cameras during driving examinations, as part of efforts to improve transparency and ensure that new drivers receive proper training. The proposed measures will be submitted for public consultation in the coming period. Kotsiras said anyone obtaining a driving licence should have received adequate training and passed reliable examinations.
Recently introduced rules for electric scooters were also cited: their use is prohibited for people under 17, insurance is mandatory, and stricter penalties apply for riding on roads with speed limits exceeding 50 kilometres per hour. The scooter rules described above are already in force.
