Indiana Extends Gas Tax Suspension Through Nov. 4, Eases Diesel Restrictions

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has announced that the state's suspension of the gasoline use tax will be extended through Nov. 4, 2026, keeping fuel-tax relief uninterrupted. At the same time, the state continues to waive restrictions on the use of dyed diesel, giving farmers additional fuel relief during harvest season. Both extensions took effect Oct. 6.
Braun first suspended the gasoline use tax in April and expanded the relief to the gasoline excise tax in May, at one point giving Indiana the lowest gas prices in the nation. But diesel prices remain stubbornly high — hitting record levels approaching $7 a gallon in parts of the state — imposing a heavy burden on harvest operations, which can consume thousands of gallons of diesel.
Braun also previously announced that Indiana is joining the federal "Even Exchange" program, allowing the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to waive the commercial driver's license (CDL) test for qualifying veterans, making it easier for veterans to enter the trucking industry. The program is part of the Trump administration's "Freedom Haulers" initiative; veterans with qualifying military driving credentials can exchange their military licenses directly for Indiana CDLs.
