Kansas Sen. Marshall Pays Six-Year-Old "Cookie Bill": $678 Debt Repaid Double

Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas this weekend settled a baking bill that had gone unpaid for six years. Bakery owner Holly Thomas posted on social media Oct. 9 that Marshall's 2020 campaign owed $678.75 for cookies, brownies and cupcakes ordered for a primary-night party, and that her repeated attempts to collect had gone unanswered. "This is not about partisanship or policy," Thomas wrote. "It's about honoring financial commitments as a small business owner." She added that she would not vote for Marshall this year.
On Oct. 10 Marshall posted a screenshot of a $1,300 payment on social media, saying "as soon as we learned of this, we immediately contacted the vendor to apologize and paid double for the 2020 bill." Thomas later confirmed she could "finally mark this invoice as paid."
The flap comes as Marshall faces an unexpectedly tight re-election race: a New York Times/Siena College poll shows him tied 45%-45% with Democratic challenger Adam Hammett, and Kansas could elect its first Democratic senator in nearly a century. Marshall was also criticized last month after reports that he had sued more than 700 patients over unpaid medical bills.
