[Video] Tom Cruise's 'Digger' Now Projected to Lose $245 Million, Among the Biggest Flops Ever

Monday, October 12, 2026 · Film · GSM News

Tom Cruise's "Digger," directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, fell about 60 percent in its second weekend, reaching just $14.4 million in North America and $35.3 million worldwide, Variety reported. The film is now expected to finish near $50 million globally, putting its projected theatrical loss at roughly $245 million — up from an earlier $150–200 million estimate and among the largest in industry history, though still shy of "John Carter's" estimated $255–280 million loss.

The math is driven by cost: Warner Bros. initially approved a $125 million production budget that climbed to between $160 million and $180 million after the shoot ran long, plus about $100 million in global marketing. Variety calculates a break-even point near $350 million worldwide; a Warner Bros. spokesperson puts it at $300 million. Cruise plays an oil tycoon whose company triggers an ecological catastrophe, in a cast that includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons and Riz Ahmed.

Despite the commercial failure, Anne Hathaway, Jane Fonda, Guillermo del Toro and Mandy Patinkin have publicly defended the film, urging audiences to judge for themselves; Hathaway gave it a five-star rating on Letterboxd. A planned awards-season campaign of about $15 million is expected to be scaled back.
