Industry Roundup: 'Social Reckoning' Flops, 'Other Mommy' Breaks Out, 'Miami Vice '85' First Look

Variety's daily briefing and The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision newsletter rounded up a busy week in the industry:
Aaron Sorkin's Facebook-whistleblower drama "The Social Reckoning" opened to only about $5.5 million and was widely branded a flop, while the low-budget horror entry "Other Mommy" broke out with about $27.5 million from 3,200 theaters against a reported $19 million cost. Universal released first-look images from "Miami Vice '85," with Michael B. Jordan as Tubbs and Austin Butler as Crockett for director Joseph Kosinski ("Top Gun: Maverick," "F1"); the reboot of the 1984–89 series arrives May 19, 2028, with John Leguizamo and Walton Goggins also in the cast.
Elsewhere, Sony hired YouTube executive Fede Goldenberg to run Screen Gems, the label behind "Resident Evil," "Underworld" and "Easy A"; Mattel named Catherine Wood to lead its dolls business; spy thrillers, royal romances, a Zulu epic and vertical micro-dramas were the hot sellers at MIPCOM in Cannes; Netflix said at Busan that 300 of its titles have used SI; Danny Boyle's Murdoch drama "Ink" used SI to recreate Margaret Thatcher; and A24 is adapting Emma Cline's "The Guest" with Lorene Scafaria directing and Sadie Sink starring.
