Whitmer Orders Flags Lowered at Michigan Capitol Complex to Honor Former State Senator John Pappageorge

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags at the State Capitol Complex lowered to half-staff in honor of former state senator John Pappageorge. The flags will be restored to full-staff on October 14.
"Senator Pappageorge was a dedicated public servant," Whitmer said in a statement offering condolences to his family. Pappageorge, who was born in 1931 on Detroit's east side, served in the U.S. Army and later worked at General Dynamics Land Systems before his career in the Michigan Senate.
Lowering flags to half-staff is the customary gesture by which U.S. governments honor deceased public officials; the Governor's office said the order applies to the Capitol Complex only.
