AUSTIN — Governor Greg Abbott announced on October 12 that 84 Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants totaling over $20 million have been awarded through the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to Texas public junior, state, and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools across the state.

The grants will help schools buy equipment to start or improve career and technical education (CTE) programs leading to high-demand careers; in the first year alone, the new equipment will help train more than 7,400 students. "Students deserve a clear and affordable path to high-paying careers," Abbott said. "Through more than $20 million in career training grants, Texas students will have the opportunity to earn licenses, certificates, or college degrees that lead to high-wage jobs." TWC Chairman Joe Esparza said a skilled workforce is essential to Texas businesses and the state's economy.

Examples of this round's grants include $350,000 to Alamo Colleges to train 300 data-science students; $350,000 to Austin Community College to train 225 semiconductor technicians; $350,000 to South Texas College to train 200 nurses; and $350,000 to Lone Star College to train 250 software developers. JET grants, funded by the Texas Legislature each biennium, defray start-up costs for programs that train students for high-demand occupations.
