THR Review: 'VisionQuest' Is Sometimes Moving, Sometimes Exhausting, Carried by Bettany and Spader

Marvel's "VisionQuest" premieres October 14 on Disney+, and The Hollywood Reporter's review is mixed. The critic's bottom line is that the series "has too much 'splaining to do," even as its two leads elevate it.
Created by Terry Matalas, the series closes out the trilogy begun by "WandaVision" and "Agatha All Along." Paul Bettany's White Vision can access his predecessor's memories but cannot feel them, and is living quietly as a bartender in Edinburgh while sharing his mindspace with A.I.s including J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y. and a captive Ultron, played in human form by James Spader. The emotional core is Vision's reunion with Thomas (Ruaridh Mollica), the reincarnated version of his son Tommy, with a subplot pairing Ultron with the synthezoid Jocasta (T'Nia Miller).
THR praises Bettany for mining new layers in a role he has played for over a decade and calls Spader's turn a better use of the actor than "Avengers: Age of Ultron," but finds the eight-episode season weighed down by layered backstories, with characters spending long stretches explaining their origins to one another — "sometimes moving, sometimes exhausting."
