President Donald Trump signed an executive order at a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on October 6, giving a green light to the temporary use of red-dyed diesel on public roads and deferring the corresponding federal excise tax, to provide relief to truckers and farmers during the busy fall harvest season.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen thanked the president for the action, calling it an extension of the state's own efforts. In late September, Pillen had already signed two state executive orders: one raising weight limits for trucks hauling seasonal agricultural products and livestock, and another authorizing the use of red-dyed diesel in agricultural operations along with a state tax rebate for agricultural operations using clear diesel. Pillen said agriculture is Nebraska's leading industry and that he was pleased the president chose his state to sign the order.

High diesel prices are squeezing profit margins for Midwestern farmers, affecting every link from fieldwork to the transport of crops and livestock. The federal tax deferral layered on top of state policies is expected to bring real cost relief during harvest season.
