Ohio Suspends Gas Tax for 90 Days; Prices Drop Below $4 a Gallon

Monday, October 12, 2026 · States · GSM News

Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 519 on October 1, suspending Ohio's gasoline and diesel excise taxes for 90 days. The measure took effect October 4 and runs through January 2, 2027. The state will use more than $725 million in surplus funds to fill the revenue gap and keep highway projects on track.

Under the law, Ohio's 38.5-cents-per-gallon gasoline tax and 47-cents diesel tax drop to nearly zero during the holiday. When the bill was signed, average prices stood at $4.24 (gasoline) and $6.68 (diesel) per gallon. According to AAA data, the statewide average fell to $3.97 by Sunday after the suspension, and further to $3.87 on Monday.

Notably, the two gubernatorial candidates — Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy — proposed gas-tax holiday plans at almost the same time, and the legislature then passed the bill with bipartisan support. Supporters estimate the average driver will save about $80 over the three months. Critics say the savings are modest and may not fully reach consumers. The federal fuel tax is unaffected.
