Follow-Up: Panama Strong Quake Aftershocks Top 200, Some 900 Homes Damaged, Schools Closed Nationwide Monday

Monday, October 12, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Aftershocks from Panama's magnitude-7.3 earthquake have topped 200, Reuters reported, as the government assessed damage from the strongest quake to hit the country in years. About 900 homes were damaged and 27 people were lightly injured, with no deaths reported; the Panama Canal and other critical infrastructure were not substantially affected. The government said up to $100 million could be mobilised for relief and shelter without breaching its 2026 deficit target of 3.5% of GDP. The United States has pledged $5 million in aid and dispatched a 20-person expert team. At least 14 bridges sustained damage and several roads were blocked, while water and power repairs continue. Classes were suspended nationwide on Monday to allow school safety inspections. (Sources: Reuters, UN OCHA)
