Fire Erupts Near PlayPlace at San Bernardino McDonald's; Crews Knock It Down in About an Hour

San Bernardino is a city in San Bernardino County, California. On Friday, October 9, a McDonald's restaurant in the 200 block of 40th Street on the north end of San Bernardino caught fire, with flames erupting near the indoor PlayPlace. Thick smoke filled the restaurant, pouring from the roof. San Bernardino County Fire crews attacked the blaze from the outside, the roof, and the interior, extinguishing it in about an hour.
According to the department's social media post, firefighters found light smoke above the indoor playground area, with the fire "burning inside an exterior wall and between the ceiling and the roof." Video from the scene showed the restaurant chock-full of smoke. Crews battled the blaze amid sweltering heat in the Inland Empire.
The department noted the incident's special significance: "In the city known as the birthplace of McDonald's, the response brought firefighters to one of the most recognizable names in the community." In 1940, McDonald brothers Richard and Maurice opened the world's first McDonald's restaurant in San Bernardino.
No civilians were injured, according to officials. One firefighter was taken to a hospital for a heat-related issue. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and McDonald's has not commented.
