Seahawks fall 32-29 to 49ers at Lumen Field on final-play stop

Seattle is a city in King County, Washington. The Seattle Seahawks fell 32-29 to the San Francisco 49ers at Lumen Field on Sunday, Oct. 11, in a Week 5 NFC West showdown that came down to the final play. Safety Malik Mustapha tackled Seahawks wide receiver Cooper Kupp inches short on fourth-and-10, and replay officials upheld the spot.
Kicker Eddy Piñeiro's 44-yard field goal had put San Francisco ahead before Seattle's final possession. Quarterback Sam Darnold drove the Seahawks near midfield, but a third-down deep ball glanced off Jaxon Smith-Njigba's hands in the final minute. “I will learn from this and will be better. Our team will be better,” Smith-Njigba said afterward. He finished with five catches for 102 yards and a 16-yard touchdown.
Turnovers doomed Seattle: four giveaways became 21 San Francisco points. Darnold threw two interceptions and was sacked five times for just 195 passing yards; running back George Holani lost a fumble near his own goal line that defensive tackle Gracen Halton recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Kicker Jason Myers made all five of his field goals in the loss.
The 49ers paid a price, too: linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected in the second quarter for a late hit on Darnold followed by a headbutt on helmetless linebacker Ernest Jones IV. Veteran receiver Mike Evans, playing through fractured ribs, had seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. “Toughness and heart,” Evans said of the win. “We got a locker room full of those guys.”
The victory moved San Francisco to 5-0 and gave it an early edge in the division. Seattle faces a short week, visiting the Denver Broncos on Thursday night.
