49ers Edge Seahawks 32-29 in Seattle Thriller to Open Season 5-0

The finish was dramatic. Kicker Eddy Piñeiro drilled a 44-yard field goal to put San Francisco ahead 32-29. Seattle mounted one last drive, and on fourth-and-10, quarterback Sam Darnold found receiver Cooper Kupp on a short pass — but 49ers safety Malik Mustapha shoved Kupp out of bounds inches short of the first-down marker. The spot stood after replay review, sealing the win.
The banged-up 49ers were carried by wide receiver Mike Evans, who caught 7 passes for 113 yards — both team highs — including four catches for 75 yards on the go-ahead drive early in the fourth quarter, plus a successful two-point conversion. "Obviously, he's a game-changer," quarterback Brock Purdy said afterward. "He can make defenses pay, and I thought today he did a great job of that, going up to get the ball multiple times."
On defense, linebacker Fred Warner led the team with 10 tackles and punched the ball out of Emmanual Wilson's arms for his 20th career forced fumble, a franchise record. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected in the second quarter for headbutting Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet. "They told me he headbutted a guy without a helmet," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "If that's exactly what happened, then we've got to be smarter than that. You can't do that."
Newly signed Bay Area native Brandin Cooks caught a 7-yard touchdown, while Deebo Samuel left with a hamstring injury and George Kittle missed the game with flu-like symptoms.
The 49ers return home for Monday Night Football against the Washington Commanders on October 19.
