[Video] Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning' Bombs at the Box Office with $5.5 Million Opening

Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Reckoning" stumbled badly in its North American opening weekend, grossing just $5.5 million, according to Variety data reported by The Verge — against a production budget estimated at $30 million to $42 million for Columbia Pictures and Sony.
The film was positioned as a spiritual successor to 2010's "The Social Network," which Sorkin wrote; that film debuted to $22 million and won three Academy Awards, including Sorkin's adapted screenplay. The new film's opening is less than a quarter of the original's.
Critical reception has been equally lukewarm: the film holds a 55% "rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes, and social media discourse has been unforgiving. Analysts say the failure may stem from misaligned expectations — audiences anticipating a direct continuation of the 2010 classic instead met a different tone and structure.
