Brewers Edge Dodgers 2-1 in NLCS Opener as Turang Homers, Lara Delivers Go-Ahead Single

MILWAUKEE — Brice Turang homered off Tarik Skubal and Milwaukee's bullpen shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers after a taxing outing by ace Jacob Misiorowski, sending the Brewers to a 2-1 victory in the National League Championship Series opener on Sunday night, according to Reuters.
Turang's leadoff homer in the fourth — a 384-foot shot to left-center on a 2-0 pitch — tied the game 1-all after Skubal had cruised through the first three innings with one hit and six strikeouts. The two-time American League Cy Young winner, acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline while the Brewers were also pursuing him, took the loss (1-1), allowing two runs on five hits over five innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. It was only his second loss in eight postseason starts.
Milwaukee went ahead in more typical fashion in the fifth: Garrett Mitchell walked to open, advanced on Cooper Pratt's sacrifice bunt, and scored on rookie Luis Lara's single to center. In the second, the Dodgers had struck first when Andy Pages' single scored Shohei Ohtani, but Enrique Hernandez grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. Misiorowski threw 35 pitches in the second alone and lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run.
The Brewers' bullpen then put up 4 2/3 scoreless innings: DL Hall got Freddie Freeman to ground into a double play, Abner Uribe struck out Pages with runners on the corners in the sixth, Aaron Ashby threw two scoreless frames, and closer Trevor Megill — despite two-out walks to Kyle Tucker and pinch-hitter Josue De Paula in the ninth — got Mookie Betts to fly out for the save. Megill recorded 30 saves in the regular season.
The Dodgers stranded nine runners, went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position (2-for-22 in the playoffs), and grounded into three double plays before a crowd of 42,617 at American Family Field. It was the first NLCS matchup of 100-win teams since 1976. Milwaukee had dropped seven straight postseason games to the Dodgers, including a sweep in last year's NLCS. The Dodgers are seeking to become the first team to win three straight championships since the 1998-2000 New York Yankees.
Game 2 is Monday in Milwaukee: Yoshinobu Yamamoto starts for the Dodgers against Logan Henderson for the Brewers.
