Olympia School District Considers Closing Three Elementary Schools; No Extra State Money, Legislators Say

Monday, October 12, 2026 · States · GSM News

More than 30 community members voiced concerns at the Oct. 8 Olympia School District board meeting over the superintendent's proposed consolidation plan to close Madison, McKenney, and L.P. Brown elementary schools. State Rep. Beth Doglio and former Rep. Laurie Dolan told residents there is no additional state funding to stop the closures.

The plan remains under review, with public hearings continuing and the board making decisions in stages. Supporters say consolidation would address declining enrollment and budget pressure; opponents worry that closing neighborhood schools would lengthen student commutes and weaken community cohesion.

The dispute comes as multiple Washington school districts face fiscal tightening. The legislators' remarks mean the district can only rely on local levies or other own funds to keep the three schools open, not a state rescue. No final vote timeline has been announced.
