Wyoming Finally Moves to Spend Federal EV-Charger Money, Covering Up to 80% of Costs

Monday, October 12, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Wyoming Department of Transportation has announced a request for proposals from private businesses to build electric-vehicle charging stations statewide, with federal funds covering up to 80% of construction costs. It is the first real use of the state's National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding since the award in 2022.

Wyoming, known for its fossil-fuel industry, was once cool toward EVs: during the Biden administration, the state even rejected about $27 million in grants, calling the rule requiring a charger every 50 miles on interstates too rigid. After the Trump administration loosened the rules, allowing chargers on remote rural highways, the project could move forward.

State Engineer Keith Fulton said tourism is one of Wyoming's three economic pillars and that well-placed rural chargers would ease "range anxiety" for EV drivers. Alicia Cox, head of the nonprofit Yellowstone-Teton Clean Cities, hopes chargers will reach Riverton, Cody, and areas around Yellowstone National Park — not just population centers.
