A Day After Her China Open Title, Zheng Qinwen Withdraws From the Wuhan Open With a Shoulder Injury

Monday, October 12, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

Wuhan, October 12 — Zheng Qinwen has withdrawn from the 2026 Wuhan Open with a right shoulder injury, the WTA said on October 12, according to Xinhua. It is the second straight year she will miss the WTA 1000 event in her home province of Hubei. The withdrawal came one day after Zheng beat Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in Beijing on October 11 to win the China Open women's singles title, becoming the first home champion in the tournament's history (covered in GSM's earlier report).

In a statement released by the WTA, Zheng said: "Wuhan is the cradle where my tennis dream began, and the Wuhan Open is where I made my breakthrough at the 1000 level. I have been looking forward to playing in front of my home crowd. But since returning from injury, I have played a demanding stretch over the past month and a half at the U.S. Open, the Billie Jean King Cup and the China Open, and my body is feeling very fatigued. I look forward to returning to the Wuhan Open next year in my best possible form."

Andreeva, the China Open runner-up, also withdrew from Wuhan on the same day, citing a change of schedule. Both players were replaced in the draw by lucky losers from qualifying: Colombia's Camila Osorio replaced Zheng, and Hungary's Anna Bondar replaced Andreeva. The Wuhan Open said it understood and respected Zheng's decision and wished her a return in better form.

The China Open title earned Zheng 1,000 ranking points and lifted her to No. 23 in the new world rankings. She had undergone surgery on her right elbow in 2025 and her ranking had fallen as low as No. 160 before she won in Beijing as a wild card. (GSM, based on Xinhua, the WTA and the Associated Press)
